John Harley Airgood

John Harley Airgood Age 77, of Gardner, IL, passed away peacefully on Thursday, October 16, 2025, at Riverside Medical Center in Kankakee, IL. Born on June 23, 1948, in Sterling, IL, John was the son of Harley and Marie (née Meier) Airgood. On April 5, 1986, he married Gwen Andersen in Las Vegas, NV, and together they built a life filled with lasting memories. John retired from Carpenter’s Local 916. He knew no limits and was admired for his incredible craftsmanship. He could build anything but preferred doing it his own way and never bothered with reading the directions. Always willing to help others unconditionally, John’s generosity and kindness left a lasting impression on everyone around him. He was a member of the South Wilmington Fireman’s Club, where he enjoyed skiing and camping. He spent nearly 50 years enjoying the sport of bowling. John also loved road trips, antiquing adventures, and visiting Las Vegas. In recent years, he took up playing bingo in Arizona and in Gardner, IL, where he enjoyed spending time with his bingo buddies. Above all, he cherished time spent with his grandchildren and his daily coffee gatherings with friends. John is survived by his loving wife, Gwen. He was a proud and devoted father to Michael Airgood of South Wilmington, IL, Dawn (Shawn) Edwards of Kempton, IL, and Jennifer Hadra of Mount Carmel, IL. His grandchildren—Jonathan, Lily, and Rose Edwards; Austin and Alanya Airgood; Troy, Chad, and Emma Magers; and Dawson Grisham—were his greatest joy. He also cherished his role as a great-grandfather to Elijah and Ophelia Magers. John is survived as well by his sister, Judy Airgood of Chicago, IL, and his best friends, John Hill and Dean Rankovich. He was preceded in death by his parents; brothers, Gene and Jim; sister, Jacquelyn; and son, Dwayne Magers. Cremation rites have been accorded. A memorial visitation will be held on Thursday, October 23, 2025, from 2:00 p.m. until 6:00 p.m. at R.W. Patterson Funeral Home in Braidwood, IL.
