LaVerne Howard Findlay, Sr.

Age 82, of Wilmington, IL, passed away peacefully, with his family by his side, Saturday, June 18, 2016 at the Joliet Area Community Hospice Home in Joliet, IL. Born January 12, 1934 in Wilmington to the late Walker and Edna (nee Gilmour) Findlay. LaVerne retired from the Laborers Union, Local #75 and also farmed in the Grundy and Will County areas. He was a member of the Will County Threshermen Association, Central States Threshermen, Pontiac, IL and the Central Illinois Green Club. He enjoyed attending tractor shows throughout several counties. He was knowledgeable in restoring John Deere Tractors and was always there to lend a helping hand. Surviving are two daughters, Susan Syfert of Diamond, IL and Sandy (John) Carley of Wilmington; two sons, Vern (Betty) Findlay, Jr. of Wilmington and Billy Gordon of Carbon Hill, IL; nine grandchildren, Dawn (David) Johnson, Brad Syfert, Brian (Amy) Syfert, Kristy Carley, Eric (Lorien) Carley, Bobby (Valerie) Findlay, Heaven Findlay, Kaleb Findlay, and David (Melissa) Hahn; nine great-grandchildren; one brother, David (Betty) Findlay of Morris, IL; six sisters, Barbara (Arthur) Briggs of Channahon, IL, Sharon (Hollie) Whalen of Ritchie, IL, Karen (Ron) Kollman of Wilmington, Becky (Bob) Crutchfield of St. Charles, IL, Clara Ann “Sissy” (late Bill) Babel of Big Rock, IL, and Janet (Jim) Sage of Phoenix, AZ; several nieces and nephews; special friend, Jimmy Green of Wilmington; and his favorite waitress, “Lizard”. Preceding him in death were his wife, Joyce Arlene (nee Watson), whom he married February 13, 1954 in Joliet, IL; and his step-mother, Martha (nee Phillips) Findlay. The family would like to thank the staff at Park Pointe Nursing Home, Morris Hospital ICU, and Joliet Area Community Hospice for their attentiveness and compassion. Funeral services will be at the R.W. Patterson Funeral Homes, Ltd. & Crematory, Braidwood Chapel, Thursday, June 23, 2016 at 7:00 p.m. Visitation will also be Thursday from 3-7 p.m. Cremation rites will be accorded following services. Inurnment will be in Braceville Gardner cemetery, Braceville, IL. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations in his name to the Joliet Area Community Hospice or the charity of the donors choice would be appreciated.
