Maria M. Hakey

Maria Margaret Hakey (nee Sarti) Age 92, of East Brooklyn, IL, passed away peacefully April 29th, 2026, at ARC at Dwight in Dwight, IL. Maria was born September 20th, 1933, at her lifelong home to Armond Lawrence and Catherine Antoinette (nee Forneris) Sarti. She was a member of Saint Lawrence Catholic Church in South Wilmington where she and John Hakey were joined in holy matrimony on September 29th, 1951. They shared 58 years of marriage, building a life rooted in love, faith, and family until his passing on March 14th, 2010. Maria was a lifelong resident of East Brooklyn, IL. She was a neighbor, a friend, and a steady, caring presence in her community. Maria had a kind heart and a gentle way about her that made everyone feel welcome. She was loved deeply by many. Her absence will be felt in ways both big and small by those who had the privilege of knowing her. Maria dedicated many years working at Grinchuk’s factory in Braidwood. She also enjoyed her time working alongside Pat Rossio at Flowers by Pat and at Lake Street Bowl. She gave generously of herself through volunteer work at Heritage Health nursing home (now ARC at Dwight). She was especially active in her church community at St. Lawrence where she faithfully taught CCD for over 30 years and prepared the weekly bulletins. Most recently, she continued her spirit of service as a volunteer for the mobile food pantry hosted by the church. Maria was the quintessential “little Italian lady” in every way and she carried great pride in her heritage. She is survived by her loving family; her two sons John A. (Donna) Hakey of Fort Payne, AL and Joseph L. (Jeanette) Hakey of East Brooklyn, who carry forward the values and love she instilled in them. She was a proud and devoted “Noni” to her grandchildren Dwayne (Norma) Hakey, Sara (Josh) Johnke, Jennifer Hakey, Angelo Hakey, and Anthony Hakey, each of whom held a special place in her heart, as well as many cousins and friends. Maria’s legacy continues to grow through her eight cherished great-grandchildren Skylar (Christian), Isabel, Mekhi, William, Waylon, Alaina, Abigail, and Kenneth as well as her great-great-grandson Eli. She found great joy in watching her family grow through the generations. Her love for them was evident and unshakeable. She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, her grandparents John and Victoria Forneris and Massimo and Maria Sarti, and many aunts, uncles, and cousins. In accordance with Marie’s wishes, cremation rites have been accorded. A Funeral Mass will be held at St. Lawrence Catholic Church in South Wilmington on May 19th at 11:00 a.m., officiated by Father John Hornacek. Inurnment will follow at Mt. Olivette Cemetery in Braidwood, IL. In lieu of flowers, memorials in Maria’s name may be made to St. Lawrence Catholic Church in South Wilmington, honoring her many years of faith and dedicated service to her parish.
